EDLD 5302 Week 3

Updated: Nov 10, 2018

Week 3 is done. I am really excited as I learn more about the growth mindset. It aligns with what I thought was the best way to teach but it gives me so much more to utilize and implement. I have not been this excited about learning something new in a very long time. COVA (Choice, Ownership, Voice, Authentic Learning) combined with CSLE (Creating a Significant Learning Experience) has changed the dynamics of my classroom. My classroom over the last two weeks has undergone a tremendous change. I am mixing the traditional lecture with growth mindset, providing only positive feedback, finding a way to turn wrong answers into a redirect to the right answer. My students are responding in ways that I never imagined. I have also changed the way I grade so that the process is more important than just having the correct answer. Having the correct answer is 50% of the grade, having the correct process is the other half and having an incorrect answer with the correct process because of an addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division error results in losing only a few points. I have difficulty believing how this little grading change has had an impact on my students. They are more energetic, they don't dread coming to my math class, they are now afraid to voice an answer, even if its incorrect. My jaw almost hit the floor when two students asked if they could come in for tutoring AT LUNCH...
